Welcome to the Magill College ELICOS Excursion!

We’re thrilled to share the highlights from our recent excursion with our ELICOS students—a day filled with exploration, learning, and memorable experiences in the vibrant city of Sydney.

Our journey began at the Sussex Street campus, where we walked through the beautiful streets of Sydney. Our first stop was St. James Station, followed by a leisurely stroll through Hyde Park, passing by the iconic Art Gallery of NSW. The atmosphere was lively, and the scenic views set the perfect tone for the day ahead.

The adventure continued at the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens, where we were warmly welcomed by Deborah, a passionate nature enthusiast.

Deborah introduced us to the incredible Botanic Gardens of Sydney, which boast three world-leading gardens and Australia’s premier botanical research institute. She shared fascinating insights about the gardens’ impressive $1.2 billion collection of cultural, heritage, and botanical treasures, highlighting their significance as Australia’s oldest scientific institution and a major attraction for visitors worldwide.

One of the day’s most memorable activities was tree hugging! Deborah explained the numerous benefits of connecting with nature, including stress reduction, improved immune system, lower blood pressure, and faster recovery from illness. Experiencing the release of oxytocin, the ‘love hormone,’ as we embraced a giant pine tree, truly enhanced our appreciation for the natural world.

Our exploration continued in the incredible Sydney Fernery, home to thousands of fern species. The highlight was the massive King Fern, a living relic from an ancient era, native to Australia, New Caledonia, and parts of Asia. Its majestic presence was undoubtedly one of the coolest things we encountered.

We also delved into the delightful world of the Lemon Myrtle tree, renowned for its incredible citrus fragrance. Deborah provided us with dried leaves to crush and smell, revealing a fresh scent reminiscent of lemon and lemongrass. Known as the “Queen of Lemon Herbs,” Lemon Myrtle has been a staple in Aboriginal cuisine and medicine for ages. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the aromatic experience!

We gained a deeper appreciation for nature and enriched our educational journey with hands-on learning and fun activities. We’re excited to plan our next adventure and continue creating meaningful memories together.
